The simplest eSIM Italy option is one you install before you fly: it connects to TIM or Vodafone when you land, needs no passport or codice fiscale, and costs $1.80 per GB with no expiry. Italy has required ID for every SIM since 2005, which is why the kiosks at Fiumicino and Malpensa can take a while.

This page covers eSIM Italy basics: what it costs, which networks you get, Frecciarossa and Italo trains, ID rules, setup, and how it compares with a local tourist SIM. The same balance also works in France, Switzerland and the rest of Europe.

How much does eSIM Italy data cost?

$1.80 per GB, billed per MB from a USD balance that never expires; a one-time $5 setup fee applies to a new eSIM.

One rate: $1.80/GB, metered per MB against a prepaid USD balance — this is how our no-KYC eSIM works, and the balance never expires. No daily passes, no expiring bundles, no throttling tiers - unused credit stays on your eSIM forever and works in the next country you visit.

Top-upData in ItalyEffective rate
$5.00≈ 2.8 GB$1.80/GB
$10.00≈ 5.6 GB$1.80/GB
$20.00≈ 11.1 GB$1.80/GB
$50.00≈ 27.8 GB$1.80/GB

A one-time $5 setup fee applies to a brand-new eSIM; top-ups to an existing eSIM carry no fee. Rates are pay-as-you-go, so light days cost cents and heavy days just draw down the balance faster.

What should you look for in an eSIM Italy plan?

Check the networks, the price per GB, expiry, hotspot, ID requirements, island and cross-border coverage, and calls.

  • Networks. Look for access to TIM or Vodafone. Anon eSIM uses both, and your phone picks the stronger signal.
  • Pricing model. Day-based bundles charge for time; per-GB billing charges for what you use. Anon eSIM is $1.80/GB.
  • Expiry. Many bundles and tourist SIMs stop after 30 days. An Anon eSIM balance never expires.
  • Hotspot. Some plans limit tethering. Anon eSIM includes it at full speed.
  • ID and account. Italian SIMs need a passport, and some plans also want a codice fiscale. Anon eSIM needs neither, and no account.
  • Islands and neighbours. Check that Sicily, Sardinia, Switzerland and France are covered on the same eSIM.
  • Calls and texts. Most travel eSIMs, including Anon eSIM, are data-only. Use WhatsApp, Signal or FaceTime for calls.

What is arriving in Italy like?

Kiosks at Fiumicino and Malpensa sell tourist SIMs but register your passport; a pre-installed eSIM is live on the train into the city.

Fiumicino, Malpensa, Venice and Naples all have TIM, Vodafone or WINDTRE counters in arrivals. They will sell you a tourist SIM, register your passport, generate a tax code for you and take a while doing it. A pre-installed Anon eSIM attaches to TIM on the Leonardo Express into Rome; airport Wi-Fi is free for installing on arrival.

How much data does an Italy trip use?

Most visitors use 300–500 MB a day, so ten days is about 3–5 GB.

Ten days Rome–Florence–Venice: maps, Trenitalia app, translation, photos

10 days · 3–5 GB · $ 5.40–$9.00 at $1.80/GB

Italian city trips run 300–500 MB a day: Google Maps in the centro storico, Trenitalia and Italo apps, translation, and a lot of photos to the family group. 3–5 GB for ten days is $5.40–$9.00 at $1.80/GB. Agriturismo Wi-Fi is often weak, so rural stays push usage up.

Which networks and speeds do you get in Italy?

TIM and Vodafone, with 5G in major cities and LTE elsewhere, including Sicily and Sardinia.

Anon eSIM connects through roaming agreements with TIM and Vodafone, with 4G / 5G typically available to roamers. Your phone picks the strongest partner signal automatically and re-selects as you move - there is nothing to configure.

Solid across the mainland, Sicily and Sardinia. Historic town centers with thick stone walls can weaken indoor signal.

TIM has the deepest coverage in Italy including the south, Sicily and Sardinia; Vodafone Italia is excellent in cities and along the A1. 5G for roamers in Rome, Milan, Turin, Naples and Bologna; LTE elsewhere. Thick-walled historic centres and hill towns weaken indoor signal on every network — step to a window. The Dolomites and inland Sardinia have real gaps.

Sicily and Sardinia are billed at the Italy rate, as are Vatican City and San Marino. WindTre and Iliad aren't among Anon eSIM's listed partners here, so your phone connects to TIM or Vodafone.

The APN is provisioned automatically with the eSIM profile. You do not need to enter APN settings manually on iOS or Android - the only switch you must flip is Data Roaming: ON for the Anon eSIM line, because the service is technically a roaming profile everywhere it operates.

Does it work on Frecciarossa and Italo trains?

Yes, with LTE on most of the high-speed network and 5G near the big cities; tunnels can still cause short drops.

TIM and the FS rail group extended 4G along the Milan–Bologna–Florence high-speed line in 2022, including the Bologna–Florence stretch that runs mostly through tunnels, and your phone can use TIM there. Expect brief drops in other long tunnels and in the Apennines, on every network.

Trenitalia and Italo both offer onboard Wi-Fi as a fallback for light browsing. Regional lines through the Dolomites or inland Sardinia are where you'll notice gaps most.

How do you set up your Italy eSIM?

Before you buy, check that your phone supports eSIM and isn't locked to a carrier on our compatible devices page. For a full walkthrough, see how to use an eSIM for international travel.

Do you need a passport or codice fiscale for an eSIM in Italy?

Not for a roaming eSIM: Italian law requires ID for Italian SIMs, but a visitor's foreign profile isn't an Italian carrier's subscriber.

Italy's electronic communications code (art. 55) has required identity registration for all SIMs since the 2005 anti-terror decree, and carriers must record a passport and a codice fiscale. The rule binds Italian carriers selling Italian SIMs; a visitor roaming on a foreign profile is not their customer, so TIM or Vodafone simply see an inbound roamer. That is not a loophole — it is how roaming has worked since GSM.

That's what makes Anon eSIM an anonymous eSIM in Italy: no passport, no codice fiscale, no account and no ID at checkout. Your payment provider and the networks you connect to still see their own data, such as payment details and your device's identifiers.

On arrival: FCO (Rome) and MXP (Milan) have TIM kiosks but the paperwork is not fast. Pre-installed eSIM attaches to TIM or Vodafone during the train ride into the city.

Typical speeds: 30-120 Mbps on 4G; 150-400 Mbps on 5G in Rome, Milan, Naples. Prices from the live rates data: $1.80/GB, metered per MB against a prepaid USD balance.

Registration status

Passport required for local SIMs

Anon eSIM sidesteps this entirely - the eSIM is issued from an ID-free jurisdiction and you use it as a visitor's roaming SIM in Italy. No local paperwork.

How does Anon eSIM compare with an Italian tourist SIM or a bundle eSIM?

A tourist SIM gives lots of data for €15–25 but needs your passport and lapses or renews after 30 days; Anon eSIM is per-GB with no ID check and no expiry.

If you're staying a month and streaming a lot, a 200 GB tourist SIM is better value once you've registered your passport. For shorter trips, multi-country routes, or if you'd rather not hand over ID, the eSIM is simpler.

Can one eSIM cover Italy, Switzerland and France?

Yes. The same eSIM and balance keep working when you cross into Switzerland or France; only the per-GB rate changes.

France is $1.60/GB. Switzerland is $4.80/GB because it sits outside the EU roaming framework, so it's fine for maps and messages but expensive for video. Check other countries on the rates page.

The eSIM re-attaches to a local network automatically as you cross the border. There's no new QR code and no new plan.

Popular cities in Italy

eSIM Italy FAQ

Does Anon eSIM work in Sicily and Sardinia?

+

Yes, on TIM and Vodafone. Coastal towns and cities are well covered; the interior of Sardinia and remote parts of Sicily have gaps on every network.

Will I need a codice fiscale for anything?

+

Not for the eSIM. Some Italian services (SIM cards, some ticketing) ask for one; Trenitalia and Italo accept foreign passports. Anon eSIM asks for nothing.

Can I use it on the Frecciarossa high-speed trains?

+

Yes, with LTE for most of the route and 5G near the big cities. Tunnels on the Bologna–Florence stretch are covered by TIM.

Is hotspot allowed?

+

Yes. Your eSIM Italy balance covers hotspot at full speed with no separate cap, so tethering a laptop from a café in Florence works fine.

Does it work in Vatican City and San Marino?

+

Yes. Both are covered by Italian networks and billed at the Italy rate of $1.80/GB.

Can I get an Italian phone number with an eSIM?

+

Not with Anon eSIM. It's data-only, so use WhatsApp, Signal or FaceTime for calls, and keep your home SIM active for texts and two-factor codes.

The bottom line

The easiest eSIM Italy setup is one you install at home: no passport or codice fiscale, $1.80/GB on TIM or Vodafone, and a balance that carries over to your next trip.
