The simplest eSIM Spain option is one you install before you fly: it connects to Movistar or Vodafone when you land, needs no passport or NIE, and costs $1.60 per GB with no expiry. Spain has registered every prepaid SIM against an ID since 2007, and the airport stalls in Barcelona and Madrid also ask for a Spanish address.
This page covers eSIM Spain basics: what it costs, which networks you get, the islands, AVE trains, ID rules, setup, and how it compares with a local SIM. The same balance also works in Portugal and France.
How much does eSIM Spain data cost?
$1.60 per GB, billed per MB from a USD balance that never expires; a one-time $5 setup fee applies to a new eSIM.
One rate: $1.60/GB, metered per MB against a prepaid USD balance — this is how our no-KYC eSIM works, and the balance never expires. No daily passes, no expiring bundles, no throttling tiers - unused credit stays on your eSIM forever and works in the next country you visit.
| Top-up | Data in Spain | Effective rate |
|---|---|---|
| $5.00 | ≈ 3.1 GB | $1.60/GB |
| $10.00 | ≈ 6.3 GB | $1.60/GB |
| $20.00 | ≈ 12.5 GB | $1.60/GB |
| $50.00 | ≈ 31.3 GB | $1.60/GB |
A one-time $5 setup fee applies to a brand-new eSIM; top-ups to an existing eSIM carry no fee. Rates are pay-as-you-go, so light days cost cents and heavy days just draw down the balance faster.
What should you look for in an eSIM Spain plan?
Check the networks, the price per GB, expiry, hotspot, ID requirements, island and cross-border coverage, and calls.
- Networks. Look for access to Movistar or Vodafone. Anon eSIM uses both, and your phone picks the stronger signal.
- Pricing model. Day-based bundles charge for time; per-GB billing charges for what you use. Anon eSIM is $1.60/GB.
- Expiry. Many bundles expire after 7–30 days. An Anon eSIM balance never expires.
- Hotspot. Some plans limit tethering, and many "unlimited" plans block it. Anon eSIM includes it at full speed.
- ID and account. Spanish SIMs need a passport or NIE, and some eSIMs need an email account. Anon eSIM needs neither.
- Islands and neighbours. Check that the Balearics, the Canaries, Portugal and France are covered on the same eSIM.
- Calls and texts. Most travel eSIMs, including Anon eSIM, are data-only. Use WhatsApp, Signal or FaceTime for calls.
What is arriving in Spain like?
Airport stalls at El Prat and Barajas sell SIMs but photograph your passport; a pre-installed eSIM is live before you reach the Aerobús.
Barcelona El Prat and Madrid Barajas have Orange, Vodafone and Movistar stalls in arrivals, plus tourist SIM vendors. All will photograph your passport and ask for an address. Install Anon eSIM before departure and you are on Movistar by the time you reach the Aerobús; airport Wi-Fi is fast enough to install on arrival if needed.
How much data does a Spain trip use?
Most visitors use 300–500 MB a day, so a week is about 2–3.5 GB.
One week Barcelona and a Costa Brava day: maps, TMB transit app, messaging, beach photos
7 days · 2–3.5 GB · $ 3.20–$5.60 at $1.60/GB
Spanish city breaks average 300–500 MB a day. A week is 2–3.5 GB, or $3.20–$5.60 at $1.60/GB. Streaming football in a bar is on their Wi-Fi; streaming it on the beach is on your balance.
Which networks and speeds do you get in Spain?
Movistar and Vodafone España, with 5G in major cities and LTE elsewhere, including the Balearic and Canary Islands.
Anon eSIM connects through roaming agreements with Movistar and Vodafone, with 4G / 5G typically available to roamers. Your phone picks the strongest partner signal automatically and re-selects as you move - there is nothing to configure.
Covers the mainland, Balearics, and Canary Islands. Interior mountain villages may fall back to 3G.
Movistar has the widest footprint in Spain including the interior and the islands; Vodafone España is strong in cities and along the coast. 5G for roamers in Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Seville and Málaga, LTE elsewhere. The Balearics and Canaries are fully covered. Interior mountain villages and parts of Extremadura fall back to 3G on every network.
The Balearic Islands (Mallorca, Ibiza, Menorca) and the Canary Islands (Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and the rest) are billed at the Spain rate. MasOrange (Orange and Yoigo) isn't one of Anon eSIM's listed partners here, so your phone connects to Movistar or Vodafone.
The APN is provisioned automatically with the eSIM profile. You do not need to enter APN settings manually on iOS or Android - the only switch you must flip is Data Roaming: ON for the Anon eSIM line, because the service is technically a roaming profile everywhere it operates.

Does it work on AVE high-speed trains?
Yes, with LTE on most routes and 5G approaching the big cities; some long tunnels drop signal briefly on every network.
Madrid–Barcelona, Madrid–Seville and Madrid–Valencia are mostly covered by Movistar and Vodafone. Long tunnels, especially north of Madrid, cause short drops that affect every network, including Spanish SIMs.
Renfe's onboard Wi-Fi (PlayRenfe) is a fallback for light browsing, but it's slow for large downloads. Regional and mountain lines are where you'll notice gaps most.
How do you set up your Spain eSIM?
Before you buy, check that your phone supports eSIM and isn't locked to a carrier on our compatible devices page. For a full walkthrough, see how to use an eSIM for international travel.

Do you need a passport or NIE for an eSIM in Spain?
Not for a roaming eSIM: Spanish law requires ID for Spanish SIMs, but a visitor's foreign profile isn't a Spanish carrier's subscriber.
Spain's 2007 data-retention law (Ley 25/2007) made identity registration mandatory for prepaid SIMs, reinforced by Real Decreto-ley 13/2012; carriers must record a passport or NIE for every line. A roaming eSIM is outside that: Movistar or Vodafone see a foreign operator's visiting subscriber, and no Spanish registration record is created.
That's what makes Anon eSIM an anonymous eSIM in Spain: no passport, no NIE, no account and no ID at checkout. Your payment provider and the networks you connect to still see their own data, such as payment details and your device's identifiers.
On arrival: Barcelona (BCN) and Madrid (MAD) have carrier stalls, but they all want your passport and a Spanish address form. Skip the queue by pre-installing.
Typical speeds: 40-140 Mbps on 4G; 150-400 Mbps on 5G in Madrid and Barcelona. Prices from the live rates data: $1.60/GB, metered per MB against a prepaid USD balance.
Registration status
Passport required for local SIMs
Anon eSIM sidesteps this entirely - the eSIM is issued from an ID-free jurisdiction and you use it as a visitor's roaming SIM in Spain. No local paperwork.
How does Anon eSIM compare with a local Spanish SIM or a bundle eSIM?
A local SIM can be cheaper per GB on a long stay but needs your passport; bundles expire; Anon eSIM is per-GB with no ID check and no expiry.
| Option | Typical price | ID check | Data expiry | Portugal and France |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Anon eSIM | $1.60/GB ($8 for 5 GB) | None | Never | Same eSIM and balance |
| Vodafone or Orange tourist prepaid | €15–25 for 20–30 GB* | Passport and address | 28 days | EU roaming terms of the plan |
| Bundle eSIM (e.g. Airalo) | About $9–11 for 5 GB / 30 days* | Email account | 30 days | Varies by plan |
*Competitor prices are indicative, checked 30 October 2026. Check current prices before you buy.
For a long stay with heavy data use, a local prepaid plan can work out cheaper once you've registered your passport. For short trips, island hopping, multi-country routes, or if you'd rather not hand over ID, the eSIM is simpler.

Can one eSIM cover Spain, Portugal and France?
Yes. The same eSIM and balance keep working when you cross into Portugal or France; only the per-GB rate changes.
Portugal is $1.80/GB and France is $1.60/GB. Gibraltar and Andorra are separate networks billed at their own rates, so check the rates page before relying on them.
The eSIM re-attaches to a local network automatically as you cross the border. There's no new QR code and no new plan.

+
Yes. Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, Mallorca, Ibiza and Menorca are covered by Movistar and Vodafone at the Spain rate of $1.60/GB.

+
No. Those are the tourist-SIM requirements at the airport. Anon eSIM needs a $5 payment and nothing else.

+
Yes, with LTE on most of the network and 5G approaching the major cities. Some long tunnels north of Madrid drop signal briefly.
Can I use it in Gibraltar and Andorra?

+
Not with Anon eSIM. It's data-only, so use WhatsApp, Signal or FaceTime for calls, and keep your home SIM active for texts and two-factor codes.
