The simplest eSIM South Africa option is one you install before you fly: it connects to MTN or Vodacom when you land, needs no RICA registration, and costs $4.80 per GB with no expiry. Every local SIM in South Africa must be registered under RICA with your passport and a proof of address, which is why airport counters can be slow.

This page covers eSIM South Africa basics: what it costs, which networks you get, coverage in Kruger and on the Garden Route, RICA, setup, and how it compares with a local tourist SIM.

How much does eSIM South Africa data cost?

$4.80 per GB, billed per MB from a USD balance that never expires; a one-time $5 setup fee applies to a new eSIM.

One rate: $4.80/GB, metered per MB against a prepaid USD balance โ€” this is how our no-KYC eSIM works, and the balance never expires. No daily passes, no expiring bundles, no throttling tiers - unused credit stays on your eSIM forever and works in the next country you visit.

Top-upData in South AfricaEffective rate
$5.00โ‰ˆ 1.0 GB$4.80/GB
$10.00โ‰ˆ 2.1 GB$4.80/GB
$20.00โ‰ˆ 4.2 GB$4.80/GB
$50.00โ‰ˆ 10.4 GB$4.80/GB

A one-time $5 setup fee applies to a brand-new eSIM; top-ups to an existing eSIM carry no fee. Rates are pay-as-you-go, so light days cost cents and heavy days just draw down the balance faster.

What should you look for in an eSIM South Africa plan?

Check the networks, the price per GB, expiry, hotspot, ID requirements, safari coverage and calls.

  • Networks. Look for access to MTN or Vodacom, the two largest networks. Anon eSIM uses both.
  • Pricing model. Day-based bundles charge for time; per-GB billing charges for what you use. Anon eSIM is $4.80/GB.
  • Expiry. Many bundles expire after 7โ€“30 days. An Anon eSIM balance never expires.
  • Hotspot. Some plans limit tethering. Anon eSIM includes it at full speed.
  • ID and RICA. Local SIMs need a passport and proof of address. Anon eSIM needs no ID, no address and no account.
  • Safari coverage. No network covers the deep bush. Plan on offline maps and lodge Wi-Fi in Kruger and private reserves.
  • Calls and texts. Most travel eSIMs, including Anon eSIM, are data-only. Use WhatsApp, Signal or FaceTime for calls.

What is arriving in South Africa like?

Airport counters sell SIMs but need your passport and proof of address for RICA; a pre-installed eSIM is live before you clear the terminal.

O.R. Tambo in Johannesburg and Cape Town International both have Vodacom and MTN counters in arrivals, but RICA means bringing your passport and a proof of address, such as a hotel or Airbnb booking confirmation, and not every counter is open around the clock. A pre-installed Anon eSIM connects to MTN or Vodacom as you leave the aircraft, so you can order a ride or check directions to your hire car before you clear the terminal.

How much data does a South Africa trip use?

Most visitors use 250โ€“500 MB a day, so ten days is about 3โ€“5 GB.

Ten days in Cape Town, the Garden Route and a Kruger safari: maps, ride-hailing, messaging, photos

10 days ยท 3โ€“5 GB ยท $ 14.40โ€“$24.00 at $4.80/GB

South Africa trips run 250โ€“500 MB a day: maps for self-drive routes, Uber or Bolt in the cities, and photo sharing. Ten days is 3โ€“5 GB, or $14.40โ€“$24.00 at $4.80/GB. Safari lodges usually have Wi-Fi in the main area, so save big uploads for the evening.

Which networks and speeds do you get in South Africa?

MTN and Vodacom, with LTE in cities and along major roads, limited 5G, and patchy coverage in safari areas.

Anon eSIM connects through roaming agreements with MTN and Vodacom, with 4G LTE typically available to roamers. Your phone picks the strongest partner signal automatically and re-selects as you move - there is nothing to configure.

Cape Town, Johannesburg, Durban, and the Garden Route are solid. Kruger and other reserves have coverage at camps, not in the bush.

MTN and Vodacom are South Africa's two largest networks, with solid LTE in Cape Town, Johannesburg, Durban and along major highways, and limited 5G in the big cities. Power cuts have knocked out some towers in the past when backup batteries ran down; Eskom reported more than 340 days without load-shedding in April 2026, but if cuts return, expect occasional slower or lost signal during outages.

Cell C and Telkom aren't among Anon eSIM's listed partners here, so your phone connects to MTN or Vodacom.

The APN is provisioned automatically with the eSIM profile. You do not need to enter APN settings manually on iOS or Android - the only switch you must flip is Data Roaming: ON for the Anon eSIM line, because the service is technically a roaming profile everywhere it operates.

Does it work in Kruger and on the Garden Route?

Mostly at rest camps, towns and along main roads; expect gaps in the bush and in mountain passes on every network.

In Kruger National Park, coverage is mostly around the main rest camps and tar roads in the south, with patchy signal further north. Private reserves and remote areas may have none.

The Garden Route along the N2 is generally covered, with gaps in the mountain passes. Download offline maps before long drives so navigation keeps working without signal.

How do you set up your South Africa eSIM?

Before you buy, check that your phone supports eSIM and isn't locked to a carrier on our compatible devices page. For a full walkthrough, see how to use an eSIM for international travel.

Do you need RICA for an eSIM in South Africa?

No. RICA applies to South African SIMs; a visitor's foreign eSIM profile needs no passport or proof of address.

South Africa's Regulation of Interception of Communications Act (RICA) requires every SIM to be registered with an ID document and a proof of address before it works. Visitors register with a passport and usually a hotel or rental booking as proof of address. A roaming eSIM issued abroad isn't a South African SIM, so RICA doesn't apply: MTN or Vodacom see a visiting roamer and no South African registration record is created.

That's what makes Anon eSIM an anonymous eSIM in South Africa: no passport, no proof of address, no account and no ID at checkout. Your payment provider and the networks you connect to still see their own data, such as payment details and your device's identifiers.

On arrival: CPT and JNB have MTN and Vodacom stands but RICA registration is slow. Pre-installed eSIM avoids the paperwork entirely.

Typical speeds: 30-100 Mbps on 4G LTE; limited 5G in Johannesburg and Cape Town. Prices from the live rates data: $4.80/GB, metered per MB against a prepaid USD balance.

Registration status

Passport required for local SIMs

Anon eSIM sidesteps this entirely - the eSIM is issued from an ID-free jurisdiction and you use it as a visitor's roaming SIM in South Africa. No local paperwork.

How does Anon eSIM compare with a South African tourist SIM?

A local tourist SIM is cheaper per GB but needs RICA paperwork; Anon eSIM costs more per GB but needs none and never expires.

For a long stay with heavy data use, a local SIM is better value once you've done RICA. For a short trip, arriving connected, or if you'd rather not hand over ID and an address, the eSIM is simpler.

Can one eSIM cover South Africa and neighbouring countries?

Yes. The same eSIM keeps working across borders; only the per-GB rate changes.

If your trip continues to Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe or Mozambique, check each country's current rate on the rates page before you go.

The eSIM re-attaches to a local network automatically as you cross the border. There's no new QR code and no new plan.

eSIM South Africa FAQ

Does an eSIM work in Kruger National Park?

+

Around the main rest camps and tar roads in the south, yes. Coverage is patchy in the central and northern areas and often absent in private reserves, on every network. Download offline maps before you go.

Do I need to do RICA for an eSIM?

+

Not for Anon eSIM. RICA applies to South African SIMs. Anon eSIM is issued abroad and needs no passport or proof of address.

Does load-shedding affect mobile coverage?

+

It can. During past power cuts some towers went offline once their backup batteries ran down. Load-shedding has been largely absent through 2026, but if it returns, expect occasional gaps during outages.

Is 5G available?

+

In parts of Johannesburg and Cape Town. Most of the country runs on LTE, which is plenty for maps and messaging.

Is hotspot included?

+

Yes. Your eSIM South Africa balance covers hotspot at full speed, so you can tether a laptop at your lodge or guesthouse.

Can I get a South African phone number with an eSIM?

+

Not with Anon eSIM. It's data-only, so use WhatsApp, Signal or FaceTime for calls, and keep your home SIM active for texts and two-factor codes.

The bottom line

The easiest eSIM South Africa setup is one you install at home: no RICA paperwork, MTN or Vodacom coverage, and a balance that carries over to your next trip. At $4.80/GB, keep big uploads for lodge or hotel Wi-Fi.
