How to buy an eSIM with Monero (and what the swap actually reveals)

A practical walkthrough for paying for mobile data with XMR: which providers take Monero directly, how the swap-to-Lightning route works at Anon eSIM, and where the privacy trail really ends.

Monero is the payment rail privacy people actually want for a mobile data purchase, because it is the one where chain analysis has nothing to work with. This post explains the two ways to pay for an eSIM with XMR, walks through the swap route step by step, and is candid about what each route does and does not hide — including at Anon eSIM, where Monero is accepted via an instant swap rather than directly.

Two routes: direct XMR and swap-to-Lightning

Direct XMR checkout. The provider runs a Monero wallet (or a processor that settles in XMR) and shows you an address or a QR at checkout. Silent.link, PikaSim and nadanada do this. The purchase leaves no trace on a public ledger that links to you; the provider sees a payment arrive and nothing else.

Swap to Lightning at checkout. The provider shows a Bitcoin Lightning invoice; you pay it from an instant-swap service (FixedFloat, Trocador, ChangeNow) that takes your XMR and settles the invoice in sats. Anon eSIM works this way today. The swap service sees your XMR come in and the Lightning invoice go out; the eSIM provider sees only a Lightning payment; the Monero ledger, as always, shows nothing useful to anyone.

The trade-off is one extra party. A reputable swap service with no account and no logs policy adds little risk; a swap service that keeps logs could, in theory, pair "this XMR transaction paid this Lightning invoice". If that is inside your threat model, use a provider with direct XMR. If your threat model is data brokers, breach dumps and not handing a passport to a kiosk, either route removes your identity from the purchase completely.

Step by step: Monero → Lightning → eSIM

  1. Open the buy card on the no-KYC eSIM page, pick an amount ($5 minimum, plus the one-time $5 setup fee on a new eSIM), choose Crypto → Lightning. A Lightning invoice appears with a 10–15 minute expiry.
  2. Open a swap service in another tab: Trocador (aggregates several swappers and shows their KYC/log policies) or FixedFloat. Choose XMR → BTC Lightning, paste the invoice, and confirm the XMR amount. Rates are typically within 1–2% of spot plus a network fee.
  3. Send the XMR from your own wallet — Cake Wallet, Monerujo, Feather or the GUI. Do not send from an exchange; exchange withdrawals are linked to your KYC'd account there.
  4. Wait. Monero confirmations take about two minutes each and most swap services need one to two before paying the invoice. Under ten minutes is normal. If the Lightning invoice expires first, most swappers refund or re-issue; ask before re-sending.
  5. The invoice settles, the eSIM page shows your recovery token and QR. Save the token in a password manager; it is the only credential.
  6. Install and use. Scan the QR or use the one-tap link, turn on Data Roaming for the Anon eSIM line, done. Top-ups later follow the same swap route with no setup fee.

What Monero does and does not protect

Paying with XMR removes the last identity link in the purchase: there is no card, no exchange account and no public ledger trail. It does nothing about the network layer. Once the eSIM is in your phone, the carrier still sees the IMEI, the cell tower and the traffic metadata, exactly as with a card-bought SIM. The payment trails compared table on the explainer sets card, on-chain Bitcoin, Lightning, USDT and Monero side by side; the short version is that Monero and Lightning-from-a-non-custodial-wallet are the two rails with no financial identity anywhere in the chain, and Monero is the only one with no public ledger at all.

Wallet and swap hygiene

  • Use a self-custody Monero wallet (Cake, Monerujo, Feather). Exchange wallets are KYC'd by definition.
  • Prefer swap services that require no account and publish a no-logs policy; Trocador's list shows each swapper's KYC risk rating.
  • Do the checkout over a VPN or Tor if the visiting IP matters to you; the web server, like every web server, sees it for the duration of the request.
  • Do not add the optional backup email to the eSIM unless you want the convenience; it would be the only piece of PII on the account.

How much does the swap cost?

Typically 0.5–2% spread plus the Monero network fee (a few cents) and the Lightning routing fee (usually under one cent). On a $20 top-up expect to pay about $20.30–20.50 in XMR. Compare that with a card, where Stripe's fee is absorbed by us but the bank statement shows the purchase.

What if the swap service asks for ID?

Abort and use another one. Reputable instant swappers do not ask for ID at these amounts; a small number will flag "suspicious" transactions and demand KYC to release funds, which is precisely the failure mode Trocador's risk ratings exist to warn you about. Stick to swappers rated low-risk and keep individual top-ups modest.

Can I pay with Monero on Tor?

Yes. Anon eSIM's checkout works over Tor Browser, most swap services have onion mirrors, and Cake Wallet and Feather can route over Tor. The Lightning invoice is just a string; nothing about the flow needs your real IP.

Why don't you accept Monero directly yet?

Operational, not philosophical: our current crypto processor settles Lightning and USDT instantly and reconciles cleanly against per-MB billing. Direct XMR needs either a self-hosted wallet with manual reconciliation or a processor that supports it; we are testing the second. Until then the swap route gives the same privacy at the eSIM end, with the one extra party described above.

Is it legal to buy an eSIM with Monero?

Yes, in the same way it is legal to buy anything with any currency you lawfully hold. Some jurisdictions restrict exchanges that list privacy coins; none we know of restricts a merchant accepting payment for a data plan. See is buying a no-KYC eSIM legal?

A worked example

Say you want $20 of balance for a fortnight in Spain and Portugal at $0.80–0.90/GB, which is 22–25 GB of headroom and far more than you will use. Checkout shows a Lightning invoice for 20 USD-equivalent in sats. On Trocador the XMR→Lightning quote comes in at 0.09 XMR including fees (the exact figure moves with the rate). You paste the invoice, send 0.09 XMR from Cake Wallet, and about six minutes later the eSIM page flips from "waiting for payment" to your recovery token and QR. Total cost in XMR terms: about $20.40. What each party saw: your wallet, a payment to the swapper; the swapper, XMR in and a Lightning invoice out; Anon eSIM, a settled Lightning invoice with no sender information at all. Nothing in that chain has your name on it, and the Monero side leaves no public trail to analyse later.
